Malfeasance. Stupidity? Pornography!

Some links lead to examples of pornography published by Michael Peven of the University of Arkansas Pornography professor. All links open in new window or tab. This was my first direct attempt at communication.

Formal complaint about Michael Peven who is a tenured University of Arkansas Photography professor..

Michael Peven has been there for thirty-two years. Michael Peven is why photography is there in name only and as a waste of taxpayer money! The University of Arkansas is worse with Michael Peven than they could be having no photography at all!

A degree from the University of Arkansas in photography implies the degree holder studied under Michael Peven.

Studying photography at the University of Arkansas, a person implies an approval of Michael Peven’s pornography masquerading as art!

Michael Peven pornography will offend the sense of morality of any reasonable juror. Even the most accepting of the nude as art. Michael Peven continues to lead the University of Arkansas in non-photography after more than a quarter century as its figurehead. Michael Peven's tenure must be so very powerful!

Michael Peven feels publishing erotica and pornography will not harm his career. It probably won't.

Someone should explain why the University of Arkansas has wasted so much money on Michael Peven's department and tell what the University of Arkansas intends to do about this now that their obvious oversight has been exposed?

One action seeking a legal remedy would be a suit of malfeasance. The Provost, Chancellor and Board would be defendants as would Michael Peven. Given any prospective juror's probable mindset during these troubled financial times, I doubt that I am the only one who feels the University of Arkansas made a severe error hiring Michael Peven as a photo instructor, much less as head of photography.

Potential or prior donors might decide instead to support a new NWA Crystal Bridges Museum of visual art?

Michael Peven snapped a photo of a semi-nude male, along with his erect penis, and printed it on a simulated matchbook. Michael Peven then calls it a snatch book. Michael Peven first published pornographic photos of an erect penis about thirty years ago. Michael Peven still offers it for public viewing. It was removed from the University of Arkansas website after complaints that minors were not even warned! The porn once found on the University of Arkansas server is still linked below on a server of a book seller friend of Michael Peven. It was first pulled from the University of Arkansas server but it was removed after receiving a public complaint. The green text below accompanied the vulgar images.

A set of six oversize styled matchbooks featuring well known US landmarks and monuments on the front flip cover. Also titled "SNATCHES”, the sexual wordplay hints at the subtext, here laid out not beneath the surface but under the (matchbook) covers, that suggests a less than Puritan take of some of Us' more famous and revered erections

It appears Michael Peven initially published pornography two years after the University hired him thirty-two years ago? He still markets these " snatches" or "artist books" TODAY!

It is a vulgar publication! Michael Peven has been a pornographer paid as an art instructor by the University of Arkansas for thirty years after it was published. An erection shown inside what he calls a "snatch" is not a nude study as art. It is a sexually explicit photo of an erection. How many donors will still be donors after they see his vulgarity they have paid for? Perhaps they have not noticed?

Malfeasance. Stupidity? Pornography. I call it all three. His vulgar publication was thirty years ago.

Since the University of Arkansas has had the opportunity and duty to know this for thirty years and has done nothing, the reasonable person who sees it must believe the University thinks it acceptable? Especially after being made aware of it many times.

In these hard economic times, the erect penis Michael Peven publishes a photo of will be all the evidence anyone needs to introduce besides the total cost of thirty years salary and the pension he will now receive. Removing its marketing now will not help his morals. It will stop his continuing to repel potential students and donors to the University of Arkansas?

How much does it matter who the penis was owned by? Michael Peven's site on the University of Arkansas server once showed them with no warning to minors.

Can you find an artistic photo by Michael Peven on Michael Peven's uark.edu site or anywhere else? I couldn't. It should have been easier to find artistic photography done by the photo instructor figurehead at a major university.

How many have sought an MFA in photography in Michael Peven's thirty-two years? How many students came to study him and how many more might have come if he were gone?

How does the University of Arkansas hire a man to teach photography who has no degree in photography? How do they then not notice his inability to do anything but artist books? One series he proudly calls 'snatches' today. Keeping with the sexual wordplay, many are pornography.

WHY would the University of Arkansas hire a PORNOGRAPHER to teach photography? THEY DID!

Michael Peven has no degree in photography.

Was an Artist Book MFA as close as Arkansas could get to photography? I hope not.

Will Michael Peven's departure be fast enough and quiet enough to avoid court and loss of donors? NO

If Michael Peven is taken aside and asked to resign to prevent being fired Michael Peven might use his prior open-heart surgery and bad health to retire quietly. Michael Peven being offered and then accepting an early retirement would solve the University's dilemma.

How many schoolteachers were fired for nude photos that were not as vulgar as done by Michael Peven? Here are quick examples found on the internet. (1)(2)(3)(4)(...)

If an acceptable instructor replaced him, more artists might pursue a degree in photography at the University of Arkansas?

During these tight economic times, how newsworthy will abuse of money at the University of Arkansas be? The pornographer employed by the Art Department at the University of Arkansas will be hard to ignore. Michael Peven's history as a publisher of pornography and Michael Peven's lack of morality will be glaring.

What will the Walton family or other large donors think about donating after reading of this issue?

Michael Peven should be dismissed for cause or otherwise replaced in the event he refuses to cease publishing his pornographic 'snatch' books? Will it be quick enough and quiet enough to maintain donor happiness? A thirty year overdue firing for this cause will bring press.

It will be hard to explain the thirty-year lapse of rudimentary staff monitoring for several donors. The firing of a tenured professor might ease the anger of many? These published facts first troubled a disabled serious fine art photographer from Fayetteville. Curtis Neeley was honor bound to try and end Michael Peven leeching the school of photography and allowing nudity displaying sexuality to be excused in the guise of art.

Curtis Neeley only recently encountered Michael Peven's blatant pornography being passed off as artist books while promoting his book "Figurenude".

Curtis Neeley became outraged and compelled to act to avoid appearing to condone Michael Peven's definition of art and Michael Peven's misuse of photography. As a serious area photographer who feels nudes can be art, Curtis Neeley must protest.

University of Arkansas staff are already very aware of Michael Peven's actions and are letting Michael Peven publish penile ERECTIONS and hide behind the mask of art. Before Curtis Neeley's complaint they were right there publicly on the University of Arkansas' server?

*********************************************

SEE BLUE TIP "ART BOOK" With Michael Peven's NUDE ERECT PENIS photo.   It was on the UARK.EDU server until the complaint.

Image was removed from the University server eleven hours after Curtis Neeley's complaint. YEAH! Michael Peven's artist book called snatches are still online.  SNATCHES So is his ERECT PENIS.

Charles Okerbloom Jr. has left $100,000 to the University of Arkansas Department of Art, where he taught painting and printmaking for 16 years. With this gift, the department has created an endowment to fund scholarships for new and returning graduate and undergraduate students.

When enough interest is generated from the endowment, the department plans to offer two $500 freshman recruitment incentive awards, three $1,000 undergraduate awards, and one $1,000 graduate award.

"This is the first endowed scholarship fund the department has had," said UA Department of Art Chair Mike Peven. "This gift is very significant for us, and being able to use the money to help students is a tremendous honor."

Another unique exhibit is the Art of the Book show at the 4 Square Gallery. On display are books created by artists. The subjects vary from those that lean toward more traditional type books to objects that one would not immediately recognize as a book. The show opened last week and will run through March 14. Most of the books are one-of-a-kind and all are limited editions. The books reflect the artists’ individual interpretation of what a book is. Artists showing are Ellen Andes, Tanya Johnston, Sean Fitzgibbon, Michael Peven, Lesha Shave, Patsy Watkins, Nichelle Wilson-Parish, Cindy Wiseman, Michael Shipley, Ben Buonaioto and Sage Billing.

The Daum presents four guest-artist shows a year, with photographer Michael Peven's exhibit Good Dog/Bon Chien running through September 13. The photographs, all of which include Peven's dog, have been produced on a massive scale to "bring certain culturally assumed preconceptions about photography to the forefront, asking us to rethink what we think we already know."

Artist Statement

A “primer” that details my heart surgery in 2002, images reveal my chest going from healthy and hairy to shaved and injured, held together with staples and strips, through an angiogram and x-ray, sternum and lungs, into the heart and beyond. The book is bound on the left and right sides and pages generally open in the middle through a series of increasingly complex methods. Such as a “fringe” made to the approximate scale and shape of the staples or undoing a metal twist tie on the image of the sternum in order to proceed to the next page.

About this Book

Handmade, paperback with stiff board, inkjet prints on enhanced matte paper with waxed linen thread, craft wire, staples, and PVA. Pages open in a variety of ways. Some are held together with steri strips and staples. Bound on left and right sides, pages open in the middle by a series of increasingly more difficult manipulations. 7.254 x 8.5 inches. 14 pages. Edition of 49. Signed and numbered by the artist. 2006.
